For The Love Of Port

Decanted 7 hrs. Deep dark purple colour, with a light rim. Young fruit in a very pleasant aroma with hints of minerals, flowers and herbs. Full body. Powerful, elegant, very nice young vintage port. Like for most very young vintage ports, also this one is fully dominated by fruit. But not with so much “raw juice” as we can find with others. However, after some time tannins are coming along. Pleasant to drink at this stage, but it will need time to have the acidity/sweetness in full balance. Medium length aftertaste. 92 pts

Roy commented that the 2011 wasn't as strong as the 2007, and was more of a mid-term drinker. Where do you think this vintage falls? Big league powerhouse to go the distance, or nice Port to drink along the way?

In general I am very positive to the Vale Meao-vintage ports, as I like the house-style.
I have had the pleasure of attending two full tastings of Vale Meao vintage ports, both occasions as part of FTLOP Harvest Tours. First time 2012 when we tasted all from 2000 to 2008, and then 2014 when we tasted all from 2000 until 2012. Both times 2007 came out as a winner for me, closely followed by 2004. 2011 was very promising at the 2014-tasting, but being only 3 years old, it was a bit early to decide (have not tasted the 2011 since then).

As to your question, I refer to my comment in the tasting note for the 2013 Meao VP:
“Pleasant to drink at this stage, but it will need time to have the acidity/sweetness in full balance.”
I doubt that I will give this VP more than 92 in the short/medium future UNLESS it develops in a way that the acidity/sweetness is more in balance. I have not purchased more of the 2013 after this test-bottle. For further purchases of Vale Meao VP, I will look for 2007, 2004 and then probably 2015 if that proves to be nice.
