A few questions about white port and good port stores.

My first question is what white port(s) would be a good introduction to the taste and style of this type of port? Is there a particular type or age I should be cognizant of?

And my question about port stores is semi-related to white port. Are there any good stores in the U.S. that have a good selection of white port that can be viewed and purchased online? I'm looking for online sites that have a good selection of all types of port and are U.S. based. I know not all sites can ship to all states but finding a few good online sites with a good selection are hard to come by.

I'm not sure of stores, but the Kopke White Ports with indication of age would be a good place to start. They should be more available than others. I'm of the opinion there are two broad styles. A more opulent one and a more restrained one. For me, the Dalva Goldern Whites are of the opulent style and the Kopke's of the restrained style. Sorta like Grahams versus Dow's.

I find the most common white ports are those with an indication of age e.g. 10 anos, 20 anos, 30 anos and 40 anos. Few producers also makes 50, 60 etc. but those or not official categories.

Besides that a few also make white colheitas or single harvest if you will. I have marked those with a *

These house all have very nice white ports. No specific order to the list

Andresen
Dalva*
Kopke*
Maynard's*
S. Leonardo
Quinta Santa Eufemia
Vieira de Sousa
Quinta da Devesa
Quinta das Lamelas

I'd suggest you start of with a few 10 and 20 year old white ports. Maybe try the Maynard's or Dalva 2007 Colheita, they are both very good. Also be aware, most white ports come in 0.5 cl bottle and they go empty very quick. Serve your white port chilled at 5-6 C straight from the fridge.

If come to Boston I have bunch of Kopke White half bottles I can give you one. I just don't drink them much. I think from 2005? They can remind me of a rich white Burgundy.

Thanks Eric, Thomas and Moses for your reply. It just seems like in the States, or at least my area there's not many to choose from.

Thomas, several of the names you suggested are hard to find in the U.S. but I'll keep my eyes out. I did find a Dalva Golden White ('71) that I purchased a few weeks back, but they're pricey and I'm saving that for a special occasion.

Moses, if I ever come up to the Boston area for a Scotch / Port hunting long weekend, I may take you up on your offer. [cheers.gif]

Dug around for a bit and found these that are more reasonable to drink casually.

Wow--Central is only 20 minutes away--still seems pricey for a 10 year old. The Andresen in Spring Lake---guess I've got to go there!

The Andresen is really good for a 10 anos and it is a pretty fair price. It is around 16 USD on sale in Denmark.

This 10 YO White from Santa Eufemia is also very good. Although a little longer drive or with delivery.

I've only had the regular 10 & 20 TWAIOA and a Fine White Port; they were all awfully good within their class. I'm working on getting the 10 Year White.

A mom & pop liquor store down the street from me use to carry their LBV and that was also great for the money.

Andresen are great in almost any category. Their whites are splendid, their colheitas delicious, the tawnies are very good too and the make a pretty decent LBV and VP as well.

This was a great tasting and I feel bad for having so readily access to almost any white port compared to you guys abroad.
