This bottle was the bottle that had been in our wine cellar at the longest time (24 years, nearly a quarter of a century!). Bottle was purchased in London in 1994. We have older bottles, but they have not been in our cellar that long! It was opened for a special occasion.

Front label of this bottle is not giving any further info of shipper, bottler etc. However, the top of the capsule is stating “The Navy and Army Stores Limited”. This company was apparently active in period 1934-1981 with 18 U.K. and 9 foreign branches (incl. Portugal). But I think the company go further back in time. Cork is stating Quinta do Noval vintage 1963.

Decanted 3 hrs. Some sediments. Medium red (and quite clear) colour. Pleasant aroma of berries and minerals at start, then more on the sweet side incl. anis followed by humid cellar. A whiff of cork in the aroma, but not dominating. Full body. Taste was powerful and elegant throughout the consumption, with the middle part being the best. Taste also showing berries, minerals, oak, hints of citrus and some floral notes. A well-structured old vintage port with very nice balance of acidity/sweetness. Medium length aftertaste. Enjoyable! 94 pts.

While this has a lot of bottle variation, as has been discussed here in the past, good showing bottles are a real treat! Thanks for the note and glad it was a good showing one.
