Fresh off my auction n getting two bottles of 1996 Nacional for under $220 per bottle, I was perusing the Sotheby's auction catalogue for the auction on November 30/December 1. I noticed two lots, each the same. 12 bottles Warre's 1985 OWC. Presale estimate $400 to $500. I have 6 bottles of the Quinta do Noval 1985 and I have opened two of them. They have not been religious experiences, but they were damn good. I know nothing about the Warre's 1985, but I figure this might be available for less than $50 per bottle all in including premium and tax, but before shipping. ($400*1.195*1.085=518.63/12=$43.22) I have a lot of luck picking up lots for the bottom of the estimate. BUT I do not need 12 bottles. Anyone want to share?

There are also 10 bottles of 1960 Nacional with a presale estimate of $3,000 to $4,000, which comes to close to $400 per bottle. I would love to bid on that, but only if someone else will take 9 of the bottles so I can buy one.

I am not trying to burst any bubbles here but ...

The 1960 Nacional is nothing special but for those that want to own an older Nacional regardless of what's in the bottle ... you could do worse.

The '85 Warre is a nice VP and a big step up from the Noval which is fair at best (85 pts. typically or up to 87-88 for perfect bottles). YMMV.

My comment about the nacional was mostly a joke, but the '85 Warre for under $45 a bottle all in looks like a steal to me. I may shop some of it to my relatives over Thanksgiving to see if we can put together people to buy the case.

It may look like a give away but I would bet that it will hammer down around $70-100 per bottle an with a 20% buyers premium your looking at about $85 per bottle. Not much of a deal on that one.

If you are correct, then I will not be the buyer. I like to bottom fish at auctions and if I get a bargain, that's fine. If not, there's always tomorrow. I have made three successful bids on port lots at auction. I find that they tend to attract a very limited number of bidders and the prices stay low. I have never been outbid and I have never placed more than one bid on a lot.
