1995 Dow Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port

Post by John M. »

Decanted 5 hours. Cork just crumbled into a hundred pieces, very dry yet the wine was not compromised. Rich brick red color with a gentle fade on the rim; in a full glass is mahogany colored--about what you'd expect at 25 years of age. Classic Dows "dry" nose with hints of cocoa and ripe fruits (Dows often has a dry quality to me). Still fruit forward with notes of raspberry, a little cherry, new leather and a touch of cocoa and presents as complex; easy to drink casually but if paying attention really has depth. The finish is moderate with some tannic dryness. This was also tasted at 30 hours and 54 hours and by then the edges had rounded off but was also a little less interesting as the various flavors were less distinct--but still quite good overall.

I've had this before 5 years ago and my impressions where far inferior and seemed to be consistent with other TNs here. So this bottle seems to be on top of its game, or possibly it is is hitting its stride with the extra 5 years (both not purchased from the same lot so provenance could be an issue). The 1995s seem to be getting to a good place.

I think the bottles I have of this port have dried out corks too.
