What other Portuguese fortified wine have you opened this week?

For things that don't fit into the other categories.

What other Portuguese fortified wine have you opened this week?

Post by Mike K. »

We need a home for the other Portuguese fortified wines - Moscatel de Setúbal, Carcavelos, etc.

Let me kick it off with ...

Villa Oeiras 15yo. (A fortified wine from the Carcavelos region)

Starts off rich in tropical fruit flavors similar to a white port, with honey, pineapple, apricot. Slowly transitions through milk chocolate to a spicy finish of cinnamon, cloves and other holiday spices.

Sounds tasty! I just ordered some online so that I can try it, too. :-)

They use a lot of new oak. It gives interesting coconut flavors. Any evidence of that?

Maybe a touch, not pronounced though. But YMMV. (I just had another pour to check, and added to my tasting notes above)

I know what you mean - I get coconut notes sometimes in Bourbon.

Has anyone had wine from the other Carcavelos winery - Quinta dos Pesos? If so, how do they compare to Villa Oeiras?

I picked up a couple bottles a bit ago but haven't had time to open them yet. Will try to get to one this weekend if work cooperates.

Great - would appreciate your thoughts if you get to it. What bottlings did you get? I have seen the 1996 but didn't pick it up. (yet)

November 2017 bottled. Label on back says “15 year” on upper right corner.

Oops, my bad, I thought you had picked up some Quinta dos Pesos.

Looks like you have the exact same Villa Oeiras as I've been enjoying.

Quinta Dos Pesos 1996 (bottled 2018)

One of only two producers in the tiny Carcavelos DOC just west of Lisbon.

N - bold aromas of leather, apricot preserves, brown sugar, vanilla, and a touch of oak

T - syrupy mouthfeel with honey, apricot, mandarin orange. Good acid balance. Vanilla cream, nutmeg, allspice

F - Elegant sweet orange cream fading to bitter (Mandarin) orange, lasts forever

Funky when first uncorked, with too much acid and alcohol. Decanting for 2 days fixed it right up. Fantastic wine, quite different than its neighbor winery Villa Oeiras
