April/May 2020 VT: spell CORONAVIRUS

Post by Glenn E. »

Since most if not all of us are under social distancing orders of one sort or another, a Virtual Tasting is the only kind of tasting we can have!

Just to make it amusing, open a bottle that starts with one of the letters of CORONAVIRUS. We'll accept tawny or ruby as long as it starts with an appropriate letter!

As people open bottles and post their notes, I'll endeavor to use them to spell it out here in this post. And yes, I can think of one example that would qualify for 'U' if someone has a bottle!

I didn't take any formal notes on this last night, so here's the short version.

1998 Cockburn's Quinta dos Canais VP
Bricking has now overtaken the color. A mix of fruit that is drying out and secondary flavors taking over. No awkward spirit and mostly resolved tannins. While not the most complex SQVP out there, it was an enjoyable Port and the decanter didn't last long. This has mostly reached a mature state and I don't really see any need to further age it. If you can find it at a good price it makes a great "cellar defender".

I copied it into the Port Tasting Notes forum for you so that I could create a link for the first post.

O.k., I just decanted a 2007 Noval Silval for this evening. I don't know if you want to 'N' or 'S' that one. Aromas of blackberry and blueberry when I was decanting, and a whiff of the decanter revealed cellar wood and little bit of grape stem.

Well since I just posted a note for a 1987 Souza, we'll count yours as "Noval Silval" and file it under 'N'.

The idea was April/May, but I can keep adding if people want to post. It could last as long as the pandemic!
