FOR THE LOVE OF PORT 14TH ANNIVERSARY TASTING - Sammamish, Washington (7/26/2019-7/27/2019)

Day 1 - July 26, 2019
  • NV Casa de Sta. Eufemia Porto Special Reserve White - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/26/2019)
This white Port if from 1973, although they aren’t able to put that on the label. Hay yellow in color. Clear with no sediment. Concentrated tropical notes on the nose with honey and vanilla. Bright acidity with complex mouthfeel and notes of vanilla, creamsicle, and a touch of spirit. (93 pts.)
  • 1970 Royal Oporto (Real Companhia Velha) Porto Quinta Das Carvalhas - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/26/2019)
Amber brown in color. Cola with purity of grape on the nose. The palate was full-bodied with some spirit, cherry, and a touch of cloying sweetness, but it held up relatively well and showed improvement on the well-balanced finish. (91 pts.)
  • 1970 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/26/2019)
Surprisingly dark purple in color. I’m used to this wine being a more vibrant garnet in color. Spirity on the nose with some eucalyptus and herbal notes. Medium-bodied with some cinnamon and red hots on the palate, with some decent complexity. There was a spike of spirit on the mid-palate, but it receded on the finish and left some pleasant notes of cherry and red fruit. (92 pts.)
  • 1970 Ferreira Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/26/2019)
Nice clear ruby in color. Teak and woody notes on the nose with a touch of spice. Some decent red fruit and a touch of spirit on the solid, full-bodied mid-palate. The finish was long with the only flaw a touch of spirit that held on through the finish. (93 pts.)
  • 1970 Fonseca Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/26/2019)
Dark purple in color. Cassis, blackberry, and some herbal notes on the nose. Full-bodied, well-balanced mid-palate of plum, black licorice, and a touch of mint. Exceptional body and finish. (95 pts.)
  • 1968 Krohn Porto Colheita - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/26/2019)
Amber-orange in color. Antique wood and orange spice with a touch of caramel on the nose. Full-bodied, coating mouthfeel with dates, orange spice, and some nice vanilla flavors. Pronounced acidity on the mid-palate, but regains better balance on the very long, unctuous finish. (95 pts.)
Day 2 - July 27, 2019
  • 1955 Cockburn Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/27/2019)
Amber-orange in color. Clear with no sediment. Some hints of mahogany and sassafras on the nose. Some slight herbal notes underneath. Good acidity with rich, full-flavored entry and mid-palate. Sour red fruit, clove, and cherry with a touch of spice on the palate. Medium-bodied and the sweetness began to become a little cloying on the long finish. (91 pts.)
  • 1960 Warre Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/27/2019)
Dark amber-brown in color with some very fine sediment that settled to the bottom of the glass. Some woody notes and Christmas spice on the subdued nose. Strawberry and red fruit on the palate. Medium-bodied with balanced acidity and tannins on a finish that leans towards elegance. (90 pts.)

Medium orange-brown in color with some fine sediment that settled to the bottom of the glass. Some caramel and espresso notes on the nose with a touch of spirit underneath. Very smooth flavor profile with espresso bean and dark chocolate on the palate. Long, full finish. (89 pts.)
  • 1963 Croft Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/27/2019)
Ruby hues with pink on the edges. Clear. Some very light cherry, red fruit, and a touch of pipe tobacco on the nose. Well-integrated flavors of dusty strawberry and some cinnamon. Medium-full body with a medium-long finish of red fruit, red hots, and some nice spice. (93 pts.)
  • 1963 Taylor Vintage Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/27/2019)
Oporto bottling. Decanted 4 hours. Amber-brown in color. Red current, cinnamon, and light mint notes on the nose. Rich, intense red fruit, and lively acidity on the entry. Some intense spice on the mid palate, giving way to a rich warm finish. There is so much quality and balance here. This is perhaps one of the best showings of this wine that I’ve had. (94 pts.)
  • 1963 Warre Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/27/2019)
Light amber-brown in color. Clean. A touch of vegetative mustiness on the nose. Some underlying red fruit and cocoa powder notes. Full, sweet, lush mouthfeel with pomegranate on the palate. Long finish with good acidity and balance. (90 pts.)
