For The Love Of Port

Warre’s Late Bottled Vintage Port – 1995 [bottled in 1999]
Unfiltered.
I have had numerous bottles of this lately and if I was today to pick out three unfiltered LBVs which I could drink for now until the end of time, this would be my #2 choice.

Big, bright red colour in the glass. Vibrant fruit on the nose and palate. A drier finish, typical of the Warre's house style but balanced sweetness. Likely drinking at a peak right now, this port does have a bit of a spine and will probably continue drinking well for 2-4 years (guessing!) Some chocolate and raspberry on the palate with a medium-full body. Drinking superbly. I noticed that only 1 bottle of the original 12 they had out for sale was left at the end of the night and many people agreed with my assessment during a round-table discussion that followed the official tasting, that this was an amazing bottle for a relatively affordable price.

This is indeed a Desert Island LBV

I have a stock of these that I will not touch for at least 5 years and many of them will last well beyond that. Without wanting to think less of this wine I can tell you that both the 1992 and especially the 1994 are even better than this one

Seek them out and buy all you can.

Well Derek, I won't be able to find them for the £5 I think you got your stock at, but even at the equivalent of £17, this is still one I will seek out. I have literally only had one unfiltered LBV in my short time sampling Port that was better and that was the '96 Portal LBV... SO beautiful.

Half a dozen bottles in the cellar, only about... ohhhh... a couple hundred to go before I am happy!

This is my favorite LBV I've tasted so far. I was wondering what your #1 favorite is but I guess you just answered that, the '96 Portal LBV. Sadly, the '95 Warre LBV is starting to dry up in my marketplace. The good news is that it is being replaced with the '99 Warre LBV which I think will be just as good as the '95 in 4 years.

I've also become enamored with the 2000 Ramos Pinto LBV. Cheaper than the '99 Warre LBV and dare I say better? Either way, all of these are great values and will improve in the cellar for a number of years.

With the '95 being this good, I'm looking forward to seeing what the '99 will be like...

Ramos Pinto isn't available around here... wish it was, I have yet to try anything by them.

I am also a big fan of the Ramos LBV, perhaps more than the Warre 95 LBV too. The Warre 94 LBV is a little better but hard to find now. I just opened amy first Croft 2001 LBV and it is quite grapy tasting. Hopefully it will turn since opening.

Have to agree with you there Todd. The whole evening was terific eh and good participation by everyone. I still have some `94`s so I passed.
