2003 Quinta do Noval vintage port

Decanted 7 hrs (probably an hour too much, so 6 hrs next bottle). Plenty of sediments at decanting. Dark red with a touch of brown. Powerful aroma consisting of the mix fruit/oak/minerals. Medium to full body. Big and elegant at start. Nice tannins with elements of minerals and oak. Well-structured port with an acceptable acidity/sweetness-balance. In spite of the fact that there was some dryness (touch of bitterness) towards the end, it was also some indications of raisins. Medium length aftertaste. First part much better than second part. In total I had expected this one to be better, but by all means, it was a nice vintage port. 91 pts.

Thanks for the note. This was one of the first VPs that I bought in any significant quantity, and I've been saving them until they're ready. For my preferences, that probably means I need to hold them until at least 2028!

I had one of these in the last few months and although it was good, it clearly needs more time in the cellar. It will be much better in 10 years.

Probably not in a great spot right now. Normally this is outstanding VP. One thing I've learned is to watch social media and see what producers are opening at tastings. Generally, a good way to tell which slightly older vintages are drinking well (if they're pouring them) and which aren't. Granted, harder right now with Covid and the overall lack of gatherings.
