For The Love Of Port

Happy Thanksgiving to my Port Friends!! Hope you are all safe and healthy.... and stay that way! And for those of you not in the USA it's a great excuse to open a bottle in solidarity.

No gathering....just a dessert zoom with family we are usually with. These are the bottles I plan on opening...

What are you opening?

I think there will be a Sauternes to start the meal, a CdP in the middle, and a TWIOA to go with dessert, for which I'm thinking S. Leonardo 20 or 30. A small gathering is being converted to a split, but I think we're going to exchange food and I'm going to put some of the wines in small jars or bottles to go with that.

I haven’t decided yet as Dinner with be at home with no relatives or friends this year so it will probably just be a red and a Port for after. I guess I should sort out soon and advise.

I will be deciding this tonight.

In a different post, I related trying one of the 1992 Fonseca VPs a couple weekends ago, and it is moving me to open one of the 1994s. At the moment it’s between the Fonseca and a 1955 Burmester Colheita. I enjoy VPs and Tawnies- but my wife leans towards Tawnies, so I’m in a bind. Might be both and we will just drag through our Friday.

It’s been such a difficult year, and the first thanksgiving in my memory which will not be spent with my extended family- or even my mother FFS. I want to enjoy something special. I’ll be cooking all day, and two of my recipes require Port, so there will be some afternoon sips from a Noval Black- but I want our dinner selection to be wonderful.

Will let you know what we ultimately decide.

I stood up a '63 Dow the other day. I'll be decanting it around 3:00 and trying it around 8:00.

And tonight’s winner, after long deliberation with the IVDoMC (Instituto Vinho Do Mi Casa), was a VP- 1970 Martinez. Decanted at 11AM, and had a nice bouquet upon opening. Will keep you posted.

Finally decided to open an S. Leonardo 30 Year Old Tawny Port.

Started off with 1985 Fonseca and then went 1977 Grahams. Grahams has really turned into something!

2018 Luis Seabra Granito Cru, a Napa Cab, and a 1980 Kopke Colheita.

That's a very impressive line up there.

I had the '77 Graham's a little less than 2 weeks ago and it was a home run. The '85 Fonseca's a player as well.

My 78 Croft has leaked a while ago and the fill was great,yet there was some slight oxidation. Just slightly off, yet still enjoyable.

Went with a 2007 Branco Colheita from Dalva. A lot of my guests really dig a good white port. Though my best friend lovingly complained it wasn't creamy enough.

He shall have his desires fulfilled at my 40th birthday when I serve him up a 60 Anos Branco from S. Leonardo. Should keep him quiet for a bit.

@Moses really nice setup. Had the 2008 Salmon just a month a go. Really nice, though could use a bit more time to mellow out.

My Thanksgiving Port was a Brunheda 40 year old tawny. Amazing stuff!

The Billecart was silky compared to the '95 Comte which was still a brute.
