TN: 1997 Broadbent Malvasia Single Cask Madeira Cask #233

Post by Andy Velebil »

960 bottles produced. Bottled April 04, 2019. Aged using the traditional "Canteiro" method. The color is a medium brown tea with just a bit of yellow appearing on the edges. A very expressive semi-sweet nose with beef, old wood varnish and toffee. A bit dry from the get go in the mouth. But with an amazing amount of acidity, when I looked it's at 10.24 g/L and 89 g/L of residual sugar, the latter feels much less. I loved the spices with a very faint brown sugar in the just lurking in the shadows. Along with beef broth, mahogany, cold tea and a fresh salinity. This was a tiny bit shy in the overall complexity department at the moment, but it did gain some as it aired out. I'd venture to say this would be a good one to put away in the cellar and let it continue to develop that complexity over time or open it and have a small glass over many months. I can be hit or miss with Malvasia, but this was a winner in my book.
