Port/Madeira auction

Post by Frank Carrano »

Hi all--for anyone interested, I'm selling much of my Port and Madeira collection through Skinner Auctioneers next month. While they are a smaller operation to be sure (I've generally purchased from HDH,Christie's, Zachy's, as I am sure most of you have), they are local to me so I don't have to deal with the monumental shipping costs of >20 cases. I'll be (sadly) selling Port from 1935 until 2011, and Madeira from 1815 until the mid 1950s, including a bottle of HM Borges 1862.

Hope all are well.

Thanks for the heads-up Frank. I hope you are well and the sale is not due to health issues.
I'll keep any eye out for it - I'm local as well which makes post-auction pick-up easy.

Cheers, Mike

Skinner doesn't ship but they do allow third-party shipping.

I'm sure you'll get all the money and then some. [cheers.gif]

Skinner lots hammers for more than going to the liquor store for the same. A victim of their own success.

Interesting - the Skinner auction starts tomorrow - I see the Ports listed, but none of the Madeira.

I see some Ports, but not all of them? This is the Skinner auction out of marlborough, correct?

Jeez Frank, it has been years. I always wondered why you dropped off the face of the earth. I hope you and your family are all doing well. Quite a stash you have collected. I hope this helps your retirement fund!

I'm trying to understand the mechanics of this, seeing as I live in Wisconsin.

The Skinner FAQ site basically says it's up to the buyer to arrange shipping outside of the local Boston area, but doesn't give any suggestions. Does anyone have any experience with shipping wines from here?

Skinner did well on the auction. I bid on about dozen port Lots. I pushed them up pretty high, so whomever beat me paid retail or more 8--) . "Should I just bid a little higher" I kept thinking. Luckily I did not get burned.

Nice to see port prices on the rise! [yahoo.gif]

I won the '45 Croft and 2 '92 Taylor's from this auction. I wanted the '45, nonetheless after taxes and bid fee I feel like I paid a few hundred under retail (when I looked at Wine-Searcher). The '92's I paid about 30% below retail. It's hard to show discipline sometimes in an auction, but I try, lol.

Did you win anything Moses?

For port, I won the case of '85 Fonseca, and 5 bottles of '07 Noval. I was close to splitting the '45 Croft with a friend, but was the same with commission as a retail bottle I know about. Certainly perhaps the finest vintage of Croft ever.

You're welcome; the Croft was one of the few lots I did not pump up. [cheers.gif]

My limit was set at $50 more than what I won it at so it was close. Thanks Moses.

That one was too expensive to just have fun bumping up the bids.

If I were to bid on that won, it would be a one and done winning bid. All the smaller stuff I can take or leave it so it's fun & a game pushing those prices higher. I did not get stung on any of the other lots.

The second half of Skinner's auction just went live, it's very port and Madeira heavy (and some good bourbon I saw in there as well). They asked me to let them put most of my stuff at this auction and I didn't see any reason to say no. Hope all are well and happy holidays!

You should do even better on this one with Christmas and New Year a few weeks away. I wonder if the pool buyers are already spent from the last one, but for sure will be new buyers with the Holiday Auction.
