S. Leonardo 30 Year Old White Port

Post by Glenn E. »

Tasted with Stewart on a random Friday evening because we were thirsty.

S. Leonardo 30 Year Old White Port

Color: golden honey with some hints of orange and some tan. There's just a hint of age in the color, but the rim is clean.

Nose: Caramel, apricot, light dates, and "vanillagrinho" which Stewart just made up but fits perfectly. Also some angel food cake and a pure sugar like the pressed confectioner's sugar dipping stick from the Lik-M-Aid candy.

Palate: White cake frosting, Kraft vanilla caramel swirl candy, cream cheese frosting, and carrot cake spices. Neutral to medium sweet, but with great acidity to keep it mostly in balance. There's an essence of pure sugar that sneaks through, though, so it could probably use a dollop more acidity for balance. With air time, some light honey flavor developed and the texture became very slightly more honey-like.

Score: 94 points. I wavered between that and a point lower, but some air time gave it a little more richness and depth so I went with the higher number.
