2013 Colheita Burgundy Barrel (bottled 2022)
Day 1 of the 2022 Quevedo Prestige Advent Calendar
Color: dark garnet, opaque center. The color looks like an LBV that is just starting to show some moderate age, not a Colheita.
Nose: fruity and grapey. Does not smell like a Colheita, even a young one. It smells like a ruby. Possibly some very faint, old Cab Sauv green pepper-like note, or maybe just a very faint sour note. More presence than the Cask version. Maybe some vanilla cream cheese icing? Also some milk chocolate… powder?
Palate: smooth and delicious. Very well balanced, including good tannins and some warmth. Slurpy and potent at the same time. Blackberry, cassis, mulberry, maybe some sweet blueberry. Not at all tawny-like - I'd guess 2013 LBV that was in wood 6 years. Excellent integration - though somewhat strange, it is a superb Port that I'd buy exactly as it is. The few tawny notes that are there really give it a richer, smoother body than most LBVs.
Score: 94 points. I put this on par with the best LBVs that I've had, and easily above most 10 Year Old Tawny Ports or Colheitas in the same age range. Ironically it presents as less confused than your typical 10 year old Tawny Port, which I often complain can't decide whether they are ruby Ports or tawny Ports, but that's because this Port is firmly in the ruby camp. It is definitely odd that it is labeled a Colheita yet looks, smells, and tastes so much like an LBV, but it is a delicious LBV.
