1994 Quevedo Colheita Cask (bottled 2022)

Day 10 of the 2022 Quevedo Prestige Advent Calendar

Color: med dark burgundy, not quite opaque center.

Nose: somewhat funky, some minerality, some tart bing cherries, faint lime, faint turpentine. The lime and turpentine has a metallic overtone.

Palate: initial sharpness on entry from the funkiness, then acidity and rich, ripe, red fruits. The acidity carries into the finish as heat. Oddly less caramelization to the red fruits than the Tonel version, and overall more distinct/precise fruits. Ripe bing cherry, faint black cherry, and some ripe mulberry. There are also still some tannins present.

Score: 92 points. I can more easily forgive the lack of appropriate age characteristics in the Tonel version since it is a non-standard aging method. But I also find the Tonel version more Tawny, and therefore like it slightly better. As with the Tonel version, this would be very interesting to track every 5-10 years just to watch as it ages uniquely. My rule of thumb is generally that a Colheita needs to be ~10 years older than a TWAIOA in order to show similarly, which means that this bottle should be showing similarly to a 20 Year Old Tawny Port. But as you can hopefully see from my note, it isn't really like that at all. It's younger, redder, and fruitier.
