TN: 1964 Justino's Madeira Boal

Post by Stewart T. »

  • 1964 Justino's Madeira Boal - Portugal, Madeira
Dark yellow-brown in color. Aromas of saline, dried nuts, and some oxidation. Medium-body with salted caramel, orange spice, and some underlying herbal notes. Decent acidity and balance, and a medium-long finish. (91 pts.)

Good timing on this - Christies sold 6 lots yesterday with the smallest being 72 bottles, another of 108 bottles then 4, yes FOUR lots of 120 bottles.

I considered grabbing a lot to flip but with 660 bottles in the offing it looked to be a very long term investment. It was tempting at $25-30 a bottle, where they stood just a few hours before close, but they ended at $55-75 (with premium).

I considered those as well, but since even Boal is usually not quite sweet enough for me I decided to pass. If those had been the 1964 Malvasia I'd have been all over them!
