1994 Smith Woodhouse VP

Post by Scott Esterly »

375ml. Cork easily extracted and in perfect condition. Sipped immediately upon pouring into the decanter and could tell this was going to be an excellent, elegant port. After four hours of decanting I tasted for real. I struggle with nosing/describing aromas - but this was a real pleasure. Very fruity and floral on the nose. Red and dark berries (cherries?) taste came through immediately. From hours four to six it even improved. It's definitely time to buy more of this vintage and the Smith Woodhouse seems to be very underrated. 94 points.

You're right, it's an underrated Port that's excellent. The '94 version has really hit it's stride in the last year or so. If you ever get a chance, grab a '77 SW at auction if it's in good condition. It's even better and can be found at a reasonable price, especially for a 46 year old Port.
