1998 Miles Tinta Negra

Post by Roy Hersh »

Elizabeth's daughter and her best friend joined Elizabeth and I for dinner at Taberninha do Manel. After some great table wines, I opened a bottle from Mariana's birth year. It was quite the youngster, she's not turned 26 years old yet, (the age at which I first drank Port wine). This Tinta Negra was surprisingly to my liking, but that doesn't matter much. What was more important was I was hoping that these two young women would enjoy it. Elizabeth loved it and I was really happy how well the acidity cleaved the sweetness of this red-graped Madeira. To my happiness, they both were smitten by Madeira and that made my night. This Mile 1998 is really a good drink, not the most complex, but really tasty! I would buy it again and drink it anytime. It's most significant strength is the overall balance, and I liked the sweetness and great length.

Didn’t realize Miles was still being produced/sold under the label still. Do you know what market its primary focus is?

I believe MWC uses Miles label solely for their Tinta Negra these days.

Paul Miles (of the family, although the Miles' themselves are no longer involved) confirms that the MWC indeed is bottling their Tinta Negras under the Miles label. Sadly (for us in Canada), we can no longer get the frasqueiras as the ethyl carbamate content is above the 'legal limit for Canada'.

The 'carbamate issue' is a longstanding one in Canada (specifically Ontario) based on a study that showed a link to skin cancer in rats. So please don't bathe in frasqueira Madeiras too often.

My advice (as a non-qualified doctor) is to switch to showers using an 'estufa' process madeira. That way the madeira has less contact with the skin.
For additional safety, also take a rat with you into the shower and check closely for skin lesions.

In the future, only take frasqueira Madeiras internally. Preferably daily.

Now this thread has taken a certain downward spiral. But glad to see Alan Gardner back!
