Thanksgiving in the USA this week--What are your Port plans??

Port and Thanksgiving are a natural fit so I get a little excited to open something special. This weekend I poked around my bottles and settled on a 1980 Dows and also plan on a DR White 30 Year for the day. Very likely will open other things during but as of now To Be Determined.

Going to open a magnum of port. Either '75 Grahams or '94 Cockburn.

Will open it on Tuesday in anticipation for Thursday.

Family isn't much into wine or Port, but I will open something. Probably something like a Dow's 2007 Colheita or 20 yr tawny. Need to sort that...

Thanksgiving (nearly) coincides with my wife’s birthday and we’re staying in a wine hotel (The Vineyard at Stockcross, if anyone is interested). We’ll open something nice off their list, but might also take a bottle of Kopke 50YO White with us.

Gonna be with my boyfriend's family, they're not wine people. They're serving turkey and all white wines. We have a Churchill Crusted we'll have with leftovers or another time.

Also a 2019 Pombal do Vesuvio Douro wine. Which my cousin loved and wants me to find him some. I almost fell out of my chair. That’s never happened before with any wine I’ve brought.

The Dow's was spectacular. 95 points. Sadly never got to the DR WHITE....

Decided on a 1970 Sandeman VP.

Also a 2019 Pombal do Vesuvio Douro wine. Which my cousin loved and wants me to find him some. I almost fell out of my chair. That’s never happened before with any wine I’ve brought.

How was your 70 Sandeman? I've enjoyed a couple of mine recently.

With parents who do not know Port very well. Opened a '99 Dow Bomfim. Ready to go with 4 hour decant, I would say some upside to be had in 5-10 years.

We don't usually do turkey, we had Bacalhau. I opened a 2003 Weinguter Wegeler Geisenheimer Rothenberg Riesling Auslese I picked up super cheap at auction. Was pretty good, but a little too sweet for me. For Christmas, we'll definitely do a VP or three.

How was your 70 Sandeman? I've enjoyed a couple of mine recently.

This one showed some advancement in color and taste compared to previous bottle, but was still very nice. A previous bottle about a month ago showed more youthfulness. Some bottle variation is gonna happen at 54 yrs of age.

While perhaps not a massive blockbuster like some others, I like the delicateness and balance of this VP. It’s probably at peak, but no rush to consume as it seems to be on a nice plateau.

They had bacalhau at Plimoth Plantation.

We ended up going with the 1994 Cockburn Magnum which a little is still left in the bottle. I thought my guests would do a better job at drinking the port but were all too stuffed from the turkey to drink anything more.

Our wine of the night was 1996 Beaux Freres "Belles Soeurs" pinot noir. Had a ton of life in it.
