2016 Niepoort LBV

Post by Lucas S »

2016 Niepoort LBV (from 375ml bottle)
Decant 1 hr:
Notable substantial cacao. Neither dark nor red fruit – but leans toward a reticent raspberry jam, chalky tannins, metallic, above average acidity, some heat. Some flaky deposits already in play, decant carefully.
I know Dirk Niepoort was not a huge fan of this year compared to '15 and '17, but I liked this.

Next day: acidity really showing strongly with the heat, but not in a sharp Infantado way, never had a Port so reminiscent of hot sauce/Mexican food. Would likely pair well with it.

This is much better than the disappointing and brutish 2016 Taylor LBV, but does need more time for the spirit to integrate.

91, but should almost certainly improve the score with cellaring.
All is fair in love and Warre's
