1994 Ferreira VP
Tasted blind in a horizontal of 1994 VPs. Very dark in color, dark garnet, similar to the previously tasted wine (Taylor). Like that wine, this also presents aromas of dark fruits, along with alcohol warmth and perfume notes. The fruit aromas strongly suggest berries, like blackberry, boysenberry, and blueberry. Huge fruit flavors, with lots of tannins, and tangy acidity as well. Incredibly primary, with flavors of the berries listed earlier, and mulberry too. The tannins are persistent. Later there was aroma of pyracantha. I’m looking for some more complexity, but this is pretty good as is. Initially scored at 95 points, and then bumped to 96 points on later visits. Guessed to be Quinta do Vesuvio, this was quite a revelation for a brand I usually associate with early evolution and more subtle flavors.
