Color: Light Reddish-Brown, Rim: None, Meniscus: None, Weight (Viscosity): Medium, Nose: Faint Charred Wood, Chocolate, Intoxicating almost like laughing gas, Prunes, Candied Strawberries, Stewed Cherries?, Light hint of Vanilla, Taste: Charred Wood, Cherries, Chocolate (Milk), Christmas Spices, Eucalyptus, Leather, Pepper, Stewed Prunes, Sous bois, Strawberries, Ever so slightly astringent, but not in a bad way, Acidity: Medium, Mid-palate, Late, Tannins: Light and slightly faded, Mid-palate, Late, Sweetness Level: Little, Early, Mid-palate, Finish: Long, Smooth, Other Comments: 7 hour decant. The cork came out cleanly and in one piece. The back label was all in Portuguese so I suspect it was sold in the local market.
This is a very nice Port from a year that isn't known for standouts (other than the Vargellas). The bottle and cork were in excellent condition and upon decanting, a melange of aromas filled the air as you can see listed in my notes above. This was probably the second most beautiful nose I've ever smelled on a Port. Only the 1970 Andresen Colheita bests it for aroma. Both are intoxicating and I kept sticking my nose in the glass to get another "hit". This Ferreira didn't disappoint on the palate either as all kinds of flavors ran though it from start to finish. Initially the sweetness in it was held in check by a medium level of acidity with the tannins light and slightly faded, but by day three, long thick legs were forming on the side of the glass and it had sweetened up a little bit more. This truly is a lovely Port and is in a good spot right now. On days 1 and 2, I would have scored it at 92 points, but it found another gear on Day 3 and now I would score it at 93 points.
