I still have a few Bual and Malmsey from this producer and the bottles are all pre-Prohibition. They have the old tax stamp on the bottle which is a fun read.
Anyway this wine was a dark mollasses color with a wild nose that started at soy, with some brown sugar, and picked up some caramelized notes and over ripe peach as it sat in the glass.
Intriguing on the palate as well, this clearly lacked the focus of a great Madeira, and some of the requisite VA that I expect, not to mention just barely enough acidity to keep me happy. Worth the price of admission but certainly not a monumental experience. Nonetheless it did deliver a very unique experience for an out of town friend who was happy to try a wine of four score. I liked it too but was underwhelmed at 85 points. I am jaded!
