Thoughts on Broadbents Old Reserve Terrantez?

Post by Eric Ifune »

Is this a new release? I've never seen it before.

This wine (produced by Vinhos Justinos Henriques) has been around for a couple of years and has been in the Broadbent portfolio of Madeiras for some time. According to their own website http://www.broadbent.com/index.cfm?fuse ... _int=12010 the wine is 40-50 years old, but I was told by Juan Teixeira the VJH winemaker, that it was probably older. In 2003 I was able to taste that wine at VJH in Cancela, but according to their website http://www.justinosmadeira.com/index.ph ... os/dez.php they do not sell an undated Terrantez Old Reserve themselves. Nevertheless this wine is excellent and displays that typical slightly bitter Terrantez finish. As far as I know the official retail price from Broadbent is 150,- USD, but I believe that this rather high price is justified by the wine. It can easily beat some of the younger Terrantez Vintages (like 1977) in complexity.

I compared the Broadbent to Blandy's 1976T and D'Oliveira 1988 Harvest.

I thought that the Broadbent was the sweetest of the three, but I generally prefer the drier versions. At the old prices ($35-$50), I thought that the Broadbent was a very good value, but I think that they are overpriced now. I still have a couple

I also have a bottle of the VJH 10-year terrantez, bought from Patrick Grubb. Since it's the only one I have and I haven't seen it in the US, I'm saving it for now.

I had the Broadbent about one year ago, and remember it as a nice example, and one I would buy again.

A friend contributed this to a tasting about year and a half ago. It was not the knockout of the night, but fairly respectable in its own right, and in complete candor it was the only Terrantez in the lineup (which included Verdelho and 2 Buals).

I would agree with the other comment though, that if the price has moved on you might too. If you can find it for less than $150 by all means give it a go.

I have only had it twice, once in Madeira and once at a full on tasting over just about the entire lineup of Broadbent's with Bartholomew Broadbent. Nice wine but I would pay attention to the pricing too.

Tried this today. $96/bottle. I'm not as experienced with terrantez as others on the board, having only a few prior experiences.
T-top VJH cork. Amber-gold with a greenish meniscus. A bit cloudy. Classic Madeira nose with toffee, nuts, dried fruit, touch of VA. Similar weight and sweetness to verdelho but with a less glycerine mouthfeel and more a peach pit flavor. Fruitier. I do catch the pleasant bitterness on the end that Peter describes. Good length. This was very good and quite educational. Thanks for all the notes!
