For The Love Of Port

This was the finish to an offline Burgundy dinner we held in San Francisco last week, and what a finish:

Dark, nearly opaque garnet in color, you would never guess this is a 35 year old wine. Terrific port nose of sweet dark ripe prunes and raisins, with cognac overtones; Huge, intense, deep, dark fruit, still big tannins, but fun to drink. The wine is explosive on first sip, and the finish goes on and on. Although there was some staining on the label, this was a pristine bottle, with a good fill (1/2 inch into the neck), and cork which came out solidly in good shape. Great balance of controlled sweetness and dark fruit, this was a superb bottle, opened 20 years too soon. Decanted about 1 hour before the end of dinner. 98 points

Thanks for the TN. I have a bottle that I'm holding onto - perhaps for five years, perhaps longer. I opened one four years ago and it was fantastic at the time.

I agree - I've tasted this many times and it is the only '70 that I find less evolved than its '77 counterpart.
