1999 Sandeman LBV Port

Sandeman was bought by Sogrape and the 99 is the first release I taste since the acquisition. They made a big change in style, it is now a traditionnal LBV. Dark purple color, nose is showing nice fruit concentration, kirsh and plum jam, some licorice too and candied cherry. The mouth is full but monolitic at this time, again the fruit concentration is there, the tannins are bold and well integrated, slightly alcoolic on the finish with a nice dark chocolate astringence. A nice LBV to lay down for a few years as it get tame in the bottle. 16/20

Fred, thanks for the tn. I believe there are some of these floating around here in Ontario. What did pay for it from the SAQ? I think it is $20cdn here. i guess you've twisted my arm and I'll have to buy and taste one this weekend.

Actually I buy a lot at the LCBO. I have an aunt who lives near Cornwall so I did buy mine at the LCBO there. It is 21,25 at the SAQ. LCBO are year ahead of the SAQ for marketing, allocating great bottles and the futures system. Most of the wines I buy at the LCBO are released 1 year ahead of the SAQ, its so sad! Also Port is so much cheaper in Ontario, they want to develop the market over there, so price are more an incentive as for the Quebec it is the bigest market of quality Port by capita in the world!

The biggest difference I saw was the Niepoort 2000 Vintage selling 60$ à the LCBO and 90$ at the SAQ ouch!!

For the readers sake, would you please explain LCBO and SAQ to the rest of the readers here. In addition to writing out those aconyms, it would be interesting to get your further thoughts on the merits and disadvantages of both. Thanks!
