1977 Gould Campbell Vintage Port
Color is shockingly dark, black.... opaque. Just a hint of ruby rim. Wow! What a nose! Powerful black fruits, sandlewood, floral. It really draws you in. Huge entry. Totally fills the mouth. This is all black fruits - blackberry, casis, plum. This is a big, big wine. Long, endless finish. Finishes drier than most ports.
This looks and tastes like a much younger wine. If someone gave this to me blind as a 1991, I would have believed them. But 1977? It's hard to believe that a wine this old can appear to be this young. Is this the best Vintage Port made in 1977? I prefer it to Taylor and certainly prefer it to Fonseca (which to me has not performed to expectations). Everything -from the nose, to the palate, to the finish - is just superb. Close to perfection. It's just starting to develop some good complexity - not monolithic at all. The best vintage port I've had in the last year. This wine has maybe 30 more years to peak and should live long after that on a plateau. Amazing stuff! 97 points.
