If I could just find one..... I did randomly happen upon 1973 D'Oliveiras Verdelho last night (that I did not yet try at $20 for 2 oz.... waiting to see if this is one of the ones I happened to taste while on the recent Fortification Tour... ).... for those Southern Californians who are interested.... it is featured at Palate Food & Wine in Glendale.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, that visit to D'Oliveiras. 300 tourons off the boat. But Mr. Oliveira did take very good care of us after all.

Yes, had to come back home sometime..... And indeed Mr. D'Oliveiras was fantastic. Even let me have another go a couple days later, to narrow down my final choices to purchase and ship (and he even took on shipping my other purchases ). Serious hospitality.

And my mind is still in Seixal, Porto Moniz (which was after you all had to go home), Faja dos Padres, the terrace at Quinta do Roriz, and roaming the paths behind Croft..... pure heaven.

1890 Malmsey, Cossart Gordon
This wine was another highlight of the tasting we did last Sunday. With dark iodine color and a very harmonious caramel nose it showed its full power in the mouth. The wine was very impressive with lots of sweetness but well balanced, raisins were dominant at first, but also bread, huge amounts of caramel and a creamy toffee taste as well, mellow and mouth watering, then a shift towards more darker and roasted aromas with coffee and molasses and finally a long toffee finish. The roasted aromas kept the wine from being cloying and so this malmsey was very pleasant. A perfect wine, a classic malmsey, complex and impressive.
Tasted last Sunday, 8th of June at a small private Madeira tasting of 8 old bottles. TNs to follow soon.
