Niepoot 10YO White Port

Post by João Rico »

Hi all,

Has anyone tasted this new release from Niepoort?
It's a 10YO White Port (i think now the legislation permits)

This new wine made huge sucess in an event in Porto.

I would welcome the opportunity to try a good white port; although most of the standard whites are very poor.

I did drink a bottle of the regular Niepoort a couple of summers back, and was neither won over nor repelled..

From memory, the best white I can recall was the Offley, the worst has to be Taylor's appalling 'chip dry'

Tom,
I think I can remedy that when I see you in October.

I will probably try it in a couple of month exactly! Can't wait to get there again.

Keep your eyes open for Niepoort's white. They are dedicated to bring good stuff on the market. The 2007 white port barrels are really tasting impressive. Still they own a few very old white reserve barrels. It is not yet clear if they'll make a colheita or keep it for the blend of a 20yo+ white tawny.

What's the average age on white port typically? I had the Dow white years ago and thought it was pretty good, but not sure how it would appeal to me now. Dalva '52, needs no introduction; the best port I have ever tried.

Had a chance to try the Niepoort 10Y white tawny this week. It is not on the market here yet, but should come soon according to the dealer. I didn't take any notes, but this port really surprised me. Quite brown in the color (for a 'white' port) and a very nice powerfull sweetness to it (as I remember it). It was served chilled and was really wonderfull. Try it if you can. According to the dealer it shoudl be prices around 43 USD, so it compares to the ordinary 10Y tawny from Niepoort.

Hope this makes it to the US, as I love older white Ports. at $43 its a bit steep for a 10 year tawny, as Niepoort's regular 10 year tawny is only $28-30 here.

Compared to what Niepoort is generally sold for in Denmark, that's not expensive ( ) -- assuming the price is for the Danish market (where e.g. the 2003 LBV is sold for $30).

Where can it be bought, Lars? Or have you been to Porto?

I got this white too while I was at Napoles. I remember Tom had a crave on this and wanted to buy the whole production :D (only small exaggeration)

I did not take notes but got it often, I nice rusty amber color, clear, nose of caramel, figs, nuts and honey. The palate is smooth, complex and overall balanced. This is why Dirk is so proud about this product, the balance and the elegance makes it so easy to drink too much :)

I think only around 2000 bottles were produced. A very small quantity unfortunately
