Sean C. and his business partner are coming to Los Angeles next weekend so what better excuse to do a last minute offline. It will be at my place, I'l do some cooking...probably some tri-tip, steaks, whatever I think of. The a/c will be on full blast so don't worry about the heat outside.

THEME:
1966 Vintage Ports

here is what we got so far
1966 Warre
1966 Taylor
1966 Graham's
1966 Sandeman
1966 Quinta do Noval
1966 Fonseca

Please post, email, or PM me if your interested. If you don't have a bottle, I can help you find one, or you can "sponsor" a bottle.

Those coming:
Andy
Sean C. (+2 friends)
Joe
Alex R. (+1)

Unfortunately, I'm still in Suriname. Otherwise I'd love to participate.

1966 is probably my favourite vintage

...but you can't have a 1966 Horizontal without a Fonseca  :snooty:

Maybe this is the excuse I've been waiting on to open one and drink it all to myself?

I have had all of those listed in recent years and all are capable of being extremely good if you get a good bottle.

Best of luck guys, this should be a fun night.

Derek

PS: Seriously, find a Fonseca

I think that there is little I can add to the brilliant comment by Derek. You should not do a horizontal like that without including the best non-Nacional 1966, which is Fonseca without a doubt. If nothing else, it will provide perspective.

Andy, take charge and do these blind!
One person does the bagging and another mixes 'em up and puts the number on each bag. It will be a far greater tasting for you guys if you do it this way rather than being biased by the labels. In a vertical it matters little if you can see the bottles (at least in my opinion it is far less important ... but still relevant) but in a horizontal, it is practically imperative, in order to be 100% objective.

Actually it's the smaller mosquitoes and sand flys which are the most irritating. Some of them are barely noticable, but leave a welt the size of a dime.
I can actually understand some of the misery of the hostages just rescued from Columbia. I've got insect repellant and mosquitoe netting at least.

I've talked to Sean and it looks like we are getting the 1966 Fonseca :D

The blind idea sounds good....may have to do that.

There will be no guessing at top honors until after the night is over mister  You never know, something may surprise us.

Unless it's corked - it'll be WotN - especially as you guys like drinking 'em when they taste young

I agree 110% The Fonseca 1966 is an all time favorite of mine....It is an absolute MUST in a 66 tasting..If we had enough time, people, and bottles the real thing to do would be 1966 vs 1970! The '70 Fonseca is another one of my top Port's and both are drinking perfectly now!!

I can't argue with that, Sean. I think you, me, Andy, 3 bottles of F66 and 3 bottles of F70 when you are in the UK would be the perfect tasting

Based on previous experience I would suggest that you serve the Elk with the Sandeman as they always go well together

Bottles have all been tonged and decanted for tonight. Hmm, maybe I'll throw in a mystery bottle too

I really hope you guys decided to drink these "blind." 8--)

We're waiting for TNs with baited breath! I won't hold mine in expectation of Sean's ... but at least Andy is usually pretty quick on the draw ... with his TNs that is.

Well they wern't blind but that didn't stop us from our usual candid selves when rating these. The only major bummer was the 1966 Fonseca that Sean and I dug around for ended up being the only corked bottle in the bunch  Sad as you could still taste the dark fruit and get a sense that this was a good VP even behind the cork taint. I'll get back to this thread later today......
