Hi Reidar,
We miss each other again! I'm in NY in August.
Park Avenue is 'OK' - I find their prices high and they possess New York 'take-it-or-leave-it' attitude.
Having said that, I used to buy a little (Alsace) from them several years back, and it was always good quality. However, the hassle in bringing back wine from US to Canada is now so 'obstructionist' that I only consider it for 'must have' items - and I don't have good enough contacts in NY to make that worthwhile.

Hi Alan

Thanks for reply. Well their prices now are not too bad. So I will pop in.

I hate sending the wines in the suitcase, but it is no other way now. Quite often pick up
wines from RWC at the hotel I use in the US. It functions very well thanks to Mark over there !! :salute:

Reidar,

I am a native NYer transplanted for life in the Pacific Northwest of the USA.

Here are the top wine shops I can think of, all of which have some Madeira:

Astor - olde school and fun
Sherry-Lehman - probably #1 in selection/service and trustworthy
Garnet - great pricing
PJ's - not as well known as most but solid
Chambers Street - nice selection!!

If I think of others, I'll chime in again.

Reidar,

There are two more really good ones I should never have left off that list:

Acker Merrall -great shop that also is one of NYC's most active wine auction houses

Morrell and Company - solid as a rock.

Both carry Madeira!

Reidar,

You can do us a big favor when you are in NY. Would you please do a mini "review" and give us impressions of the wine shops you visit and let us know about their Madeira (and even Port sections). That would be most appreciated and could then be used as a reference point by others who travel to the city that never sleeps.

Roy
