For The Love Of Port

The official Port glass of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto (IDVP) was designed by the famous contemporary Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza. The revolutionary design features a quadrilateral stem with a finger notch cut into one side for perfect glass handling. The foot of the glass has four recessed areas that allow the glass to be held by its base with two fingers. Made from Tritan crystal by the famous German glassmaker Schott Zwiesel.

These hard to find glasses are available in cases of twelve glasses for $120 per case. Shipping is $10 CONUS and $25 Canada. Payments can be made via PayPal or a personal check upon approval.

I have branded versions of these glasses that I purchased in Portugal (2 from Ramos Pinto, 6 with the IVdP logo), and they really are very nice. Not quite as nice as the Riedel Vinum glasses, but then again the Riedels have gone up to $20/stem and these are $10.

Very fine crystal, no rolled edge... pretty much exactly what you want in a Port glass!

There is one other bonus about the current producer of the IVDP glasses. SZ in their Tritan series of glasses, makes durable and dishwasher safe glasses that do not require hand washing at all. These are really sturdy compared to almost any other glasses made and although I love Riedel, they certainly are not as tough as these.

Thanks for posting the pictures, Moses. I had taken a peek at the IDVP website without finding any images of those glasses.

Would they also be suitable for Madeira? The Riedel website seems to equate Madeira with Tawny port.

I've been using the Schott Zwiesel Top Ten Barrel Aged Spirit Glass. (Mostly because I happened to purchase them inexpensively.) Any reason I should prefer the IVDP glasses, other than the finger notches?

These SZ IVDP Port glasses are the ones I use on a regular basis for all my Ports and Madeira. They are a great glass that withstands day to day use and cleaning. Thats why I own a few dozen of them...one can never have enough

The IVDP glasses are designed for Port and although we call them that, they are only "sanctioned" by the IVDP and when Siza did the original design, they "blessed" the glass before it was marketed by OHM here in the USA.

The glass shape you show is great and especially for Madeira. It is close to what you find often times on the island, which are more true "chimney" glasses. Yours though certainly could work for Port and even better for Tawny. I like the narrow aperture and the slighly more exaggerated bowl shape.

I am 10 for 10 on breaking Riedels and 3 for 100+ on breaking an IDVP's.

The glass may have a touch more ripples in it than the Vinum's, but the glass profile is quite similar and they are much sturdier. Overhead lights make a good reflection off of the quadra-sided base.
