GARRAFEIRA PORT.

Hi There,

Recently I have been looking on the internet for information about GARRAFEIRA Port, but have not found much information about it. I get the impression that NIEPOORT is the only shipper that still makes it. Is this true?. Are there still Garrafeira ports on the market from other companies. If yes, which ones, and are they expensive?.

Sincerely,

Christopher

Hi Christopher,

I believe that is correct - Niepoort is the only shipper still making Garrafeira. You may be able to find old bottles produced by other shippers, but I think that no one besides Niepoort has made any since WW2.

Something that makes your search more difficult is that the term "garrafeira" has been used in the past to mean other things. Some really old bottles - from the 1800s for instance - that say garrafeira may actually be vintage ports. The term is simply the Portuguese word for "bottled."

Glenn is correct when says becareful as the term is used to describe many other things, most notably on some dry wines from Portugal. As on old bottles as Glenn stated. Niepoort is the only one that still make a true Port Garrafeira that is offered for sale, and they only do so very rarely.
