Rare Wine Co. Madeira listings on cellartracker

Post by Timothy B. »

Are there different bottlings of the Rare Wine Co. Madeiras?

I think the following are four sets of duplicate entries. In each case, I think the first entry I'm listing is the correct one. (They also seem to the be first entries put into CT.)

These are errors. The RWC has only released four different "Historic Series" Special Reserve bottlings and they are ALL non-vintage and produced in conjunction with Barbeito.

Here are the four:

Charleston Sercial
Boston Bual
NY Malmsey
New Orleans Terrantez

I know other retail outlets other than the Rare Wine Co sell these wines. In these cases, the Rare Wine Co acted as importer. Looks like errors by these other retailers.

I've found lots of errors on CellarTracker, primarily for Ports, but also Madeiras. Since people can add their own wine they often enter stuff that is totally wrong. I have emailed Eric and he is very good about fixing them. I'd recommend you email him and let him know of the errors.

Okay, I've sent Eric a note, and pointed to this thread as my backup. :)

New FTLOP forum member here.

I am periodically scanning the web for available vintage madeira and frequently reviewing the RWC site and current inventory page. I have contacted them directly but they indicate that they will not ship to Florida. Could someone please advise why they have this policy (other purveyors say they will ship), and whether this is subject to change in the near future?

I have found a purveyor in Fort Lauderdale, but their inventory is much smaller.

Hi Joe,

Welcome to the :ftlop: family! I'm not sure why they won't ship to Florida, but have you tried calling to ask them specifically why they don't ship to Florida? I've also sent you an email too.

Hi Joe,

Really nice to have you join us here at :ftlop: a great place for Port, Madeira and Douro wine lovers to converge and discuss our favorite wines. I used to live in FLA and am there once every year for a wine event.

I can tell you that it is actually illegal for a retailer to ship alchohol to a resident in Florida. This is something that has more to do with the FL State Legislature and the power of lobbyists from WSWA then anything to do with the Rare Wine Co. I know what you are thinking. "Wait a second Roy, I have companies that ship wine to me all the time!" And you'd be right of course. However, that doesn't mean that these folks are not taking serious chances with their ability to sell wine. FL is one of the tougher states or at least was, up until a few years ago when things slightly loosened up.

I'm very pleased we have another serious Madeira lover here too. You will find that the Madeira Wine Guide which is our brother in this Forum ... offers some fantastic reading on the subject if you have not been over there to take a look. Please do come back and discuss this great wine. Hopefully, one day you will join others from :ftlop: for the Fortification Tour (every May) which takes exclusive tours of the Port and Madeira region over the course of a week.

I look forward to raising a glass of Madeira with you one day in the not too distant future!

Best regards,

Roy

Mr. Hersch,
Thank you for the welcome. I surfed the web quite a while trying to find a more in-depth madeira information source.
Where is the yearly wine event in Florida? I have been looking for madeira wine tastings in my corner of the world, but to no avail. The wine purveyor I found in Ft. Lauderdale tells me he has one scheduled in November, but he has yet to post it on his website.
Until then, I make up excuses to go to Tampa to dine & wine at Bern's. They have a wine and spririts store adjacent to the restaurant but it had no madeira for sale.

In light of the fact that RWC does not choose to do business in Florida, and for the benefit of us Floridians, I would like to provide the name of the wine merchant that does keep vintage madeira in stock. This merchant's information is accessible though the wine search websites affiliated with FTLOP, but is provided here (with the permission of Mr. Hersch, of course).

Wine Watch
Ft. Lauderdale

I have been in touch with the "Head Bottle Watcher", Andrew L., who has also advised me that they will have a madeira tasting on November 6, 2009, at his place of business in Ft. Lauderdale.

Hey Joe, Good news, I called RWC today and they said as of very recently they can ship to Florida, which I plan to take advantage of when the weather cools in a couple months and am happy that I don't have to figure out alternate plans to get my vintage madeira fix. It's nice to see another madeira fan in Florida. I haven't found any local stores that carry vintage or even a decent selection of young madeiras, but if you find any other stores feel free to send me a heads up.
