For The Love Of Port

For a novel idea for my upcoming wedding, I thought about assembling a case of wines to open on anniversaries for the next 6 years (2 bottles on each anniversary). Just wondering what you'd choose (not limited Ports - price isn't limited, but 12 bottles of Screaming Eagle or 1959 D'Yquem isn't all that realistic, now is it?

1. I don't have any great recommendations here, sorry. Armida is one of my favorite zin's, and their Maple Vineyard probably my favorite of them. And it is hard to go wrong with Chateauneuf-du-Pape. I like Beaucastel, but most others as well.
2. I never realized until today that the logo on that truck you're driving is Niepoort. How many times have I seen that and not realized it?
3. On our eighth anniversary I got my wife eight bottles of something we really liked. Another anniversary I bought a bottle from each year we had been married. Just something for future consideration.

Perhaps you could tuck away 6 bottles that each end in the numbers 1 to 6 so that you can open them in that order over the next 6 years? I only know Port so some suggestions would be:

1. Graham 1991 (or if you really love her a 1931 :twisted: )
2. Taylor 1992
3. Croft 1963
4. Vesuvio 1994
5. Warre 1955
6. Fonseca 1966

How about getting bottles from 6 significant years in your lives?

Birth years, graduation years (high school and college), the year you met, etc.

An interesting choice of emoticons

Three bottles each from yours and Mrs. Todd-2-B. You could find some excellent Colheita, Burgs. German Rieslings and Barolo from your birth year. From hers, there are great Colheitas (had one yesterday) and Madeira ... not to mention more risky versions of CA Cabs.

Go for a case of magnums in wines like CdP or Barolo so there's little chance of it going bad. I would prefer to have it all the same vintage so they can reflect on the changes year after year. Sauterenes 375's would be cool; give them more chances to enjoy.

Operating under the assumption that you'd like to avoid duplication of shippers when possible...

7. 1997 Noval
8. 1948 Taylor Fladgate
9. 1999 Quinta de Roriz
0. 2000 Niepoort

I plugged the Roriz in there because it's really the only xxx9 Port that I'm familiar with. I do know that Taylor Fladgate bottled a 1969 Quinta de Vargellas, but it's so rare that it's pretty expensive. It's probably pretty good, though, if it falls in line with the other vintages of Vargellas that were recently tasted in London.

I'm a HUGE fan of the 1999 Quinta do Portal. You should give that a try if you want to round out your "9" palate :lick:

Roy's article doesn't go back far enough to include the 1948 Taylor Fladgate (plus he was also attempting to keep it reasonably affordable), and then if you fill in your 1999 Quinta do Portal you'd have a full set.
