1908 D'Oliveiras Bual
I was awestruck by this one and I simply wrote “WOW!!” on my notes. What an awesome wine and one I would love to try again. 95 points.

95? What would it take for you to give a higher score to a Madeira? :Naughty: Many put this up as one of the all time great Buals, certainly from the 20th century.

My older Madeira experience isn't exactly what I'd call great...not even close. So I'd rather be a bit conservative with my scoring than over the top. This was a killer bottle though. But like my article stated, by this time the palate, and body, was quite tired and I wasn't up to the best when it came to taking notes on these.

Corrected post:

In November, I located a wine merchant in Ft. Lauderdale that had the 1908 D'Olivera Bual. I had read somewhere (RWC?) that the wine was bottled for the centennial. I had to muster the courage to pay for the wine (even with the 12% mixed case discount ). The wine was bottled in 2008 and a bottle now sits in my wine cabinet waiting for the appropriately significant occasion.

I would appreciate as many comments as possible to serve as encouragement to partake.

1/1/10 - Day 1
Bottles was uncorked and left open for 1-2 hours

Amber rim; (expected) dark in glass; highly concentrated aroma which continued to build as I sipped first glass over a span on 60 minutes; nice chocolate aroma; intense up front but acidity mostly overwhelmed by aroma; medium-long finish.

In savoring this wine, there was a significant sweet residue on my lips which I enjoyed well after the glass was consumed.

It was a wonderful reminder why I fell in love with this wine. The aroma was, by itself, intoxicating. I will not quantify the experience because I am still a madeira underclassman, but the scores suggested by others are on the money.
