1977 Taylor's Vintage Port
Tasted Saturday, 16 May 2009
Decanted at 12:40pm and tasted between 6:30pm - 8:30pm

This bottle had a fill level within neck. Sadly, this bottle was off. The nose was nonexistant. In the mouth the fruit is intialy spiced, nuanced, and perfumed but then the ugliness hit. It got worse with air so I stopped trying.

A sad moment indeed. In the great Taylor vs. Fonseca debate, I've tended to Fonseca, but Taylor for 1977. Sorry you didn't get to enjoy a good bottle.

I'll have to try this again in the future. I think I got a slight peak of what might have been right after it was poured.

Two weeks ago, some of us from :ftlop: had the 1977 Fonseca vs. Taylor while at Quinta do Panascal (amongst other great VPs). David S. who was along has told me of his many bottles of corked 1977 Taylor and I think he also mentioned Dow's, but not positive about the Dow's. I know he says he has a pretty significant issue with the 1977 Taylor though. On that day, as is normally my own experience the 1977 Taylor was a gorgeous developing VP. IMO, it kicked the butt of the Fonseca from this particular2 vintage ... yet again.

Aaron, I really hope you get to try a stellar bottle of this particular Port. At its best, it is a young beauty.

Yes, I've had my fair share of corked 1977 Taylor, but *many* more corked 1977 Dow's. I refuse to buy more 1977 Dow's due to this issue. I am still buying 1977 Taylor - I just love this wine. The one we had a Panascal was superb. Very closed initially, but opened up to be just a gorgeous drink. Wonderful stuff and a special moment. I think I rated it 97 points. And yes, the 1977 Fonseca attempted, but ultimately failed to surpass the Taylor on that day. I think that the one that we had at the FTLOP Weekend Port Event in January was one of the best showings I had of the 1977 Fonseca. Roy stated that that partiular bottle was the "lighter variant" of 1977 Fonseca. I'll agree, but it was singing.
