Info request: Rozes 1994 LBV (Unfiltered)

I saw this LBV at auction tonight and the prices were very cheap, so I bought up several bottles since I have never had anything from this house yet. Has anyone had this or does anyone know about Rozes. I could not find a lot of information about the house. All i could find was what Mason talks about in his book. That Rozes is a "First Division" for a 20 year tawny and a "Premier League" for LBV's. (I hope that means I got a good buy,) :wink:

They make a wonderful LBV, one of my favorites, though I can't find it anymore.

I'm pretty sure the 1994 was the Rozes LBV that I used to buy for $10/bottle at Trader Joe's about 5 years back. It was also at Bev & More. It was a great bargain, then it just disappeared. Nice to know there are still some deals out there on this stuff.

I very much like Rozes LBV's. I only tasted the 1994 once, almost two years ago. See TN below.


Rozes 1994 LBV (traditional):
A pleasant surprise, that shows Rozes' capability of making very fine LBV's. Ripe, but still fruity, some tawny characteristics (gained from relatively long cask riping) that makes this a lovely complex LBV.

Rozès discussion!
When I see this brand my hearth pumps even stronger!
When I was 17 (5 years ago) , I was invited to go there working as a guide.
What to say...!I entered there,I think more because of my experience and pleasure of knowlegde of Port that I get at Vinologia, rather that my English,French,Spanish ...!
First thing to do:


To cut the normal tradition of the guides of Port, that I'm completally against, like:

-A speech totally memorized by reading for a weekend 20 pages aboute the history of the Brand,Port, and all the types of Port.

-The customized and almost "automatic" way of making everything :evil: , like if everybody were machines!

-The really bad strategy of tasting selection for the visitors giving them the Ports that they already have millions of bottles in their home country.

-The tour should be fun and should have many many things to catch people atention!(Including all the children!)


So when I signed contract,they already knew that a REVOLUTION was about to come! :twisted:

-Rubies and Basic Tawnies out of the tasting,long live to the LBV and Aged Tawnies :P

So in the first year,the selection was:
-White (dry or sweet)
-Vintage Character / LBV 94(Filtred or Unfilrtered)
-Tawny 10 or 20 y

Because I had so many sucess (PS - Definition of sucess for me has always 2 points:

1st - The most important,everybody should leave the cellar with the TRUE and REAL idea that Port must be included in their day routine,Port has a lot of potencial and it's the best wine in the World :wink: ... Everybody must always remember that "It was at ROZÈS that they have tasted Port A or B that was great and they had a great time there,were they could make all the stupid questions that normally aren't allowed and people are afraid of asking!

2st - Sales Result.There's nothing to say here,it's a number that reveals (for me in a very secondary way) the result of my work)

...I was invited again next year and again next year to go back there,the last year with my brother where you beat all the sales records,mainly because we have opened everyday a Vintage 97 and 2000 to give to every visitor and It was a big big big success,there were many many people climbing all the hill(Rozès is just after Taylor's, it's very far from the river) because the other visitors when arrived near by the river,they alert other tourists to go to Rozès instead of the coastline cellars like Sandeman,Calem,Ramos Pinto and Ferreira.
Oh boy,those were very busy days!

So all this text,just to say what I've put in bold previously,the LBV 94 Unfiltered I must say that it's a very particular LBV, full of smoothness and spicy jam flavours like Rozès has been doing for the last years.
I must confess that I always prefered the Unfiltered version to the Filtered ,even for the younger LBVs such as the 95 wich is my favorite one from Rozès.I still have clients coming here to buy this wine that was in Decanter magazine in December 2001 with a 5 stars Decanter Award as well as Niepoort 96 and Warre's 92.
I believe that Rozès are great in LBV's and in the Tawny 20y! :D

It is always great to get that kind of information straight from the mouth of someone who worked there. Thank you again for the great information. My mouth is watering as I wait for them to arrive by post. :D :D

I haven't tasted the 1994 LBV, but I found the 1997 LBV, tasted about a year ago, nice but not exceptional. I think their 1997 vintage (tasted last November) is far more interesting and the 40 YO Tawny (ditto) truly amazing.
