For The Love Of Port

Port consumption (and participation in Forums) tends to decrease when the hot weather comes around. Does it have the same affect on your proportion of Madeira consumption?

Living in Florida, we observe what everyone else considers summer for most of the year, so I drink Madeira year round. But I'm also the kinda guy who drinks stouts in summer too, which I'm sure is some sort of faux pas. If it's good I don't care how hot it is, that and I think Madeira isn't really a heavy drink to me. I think it can be more of a crisp and (somewhat) refreshing drink than some others. If sitting outside on a hot day I'd choose Madeira over port, but wouldn't refuse either.

I read recently that in France, particularly Paris, slightly chilled tawney port is THE summer drink for an afternoon potable, sometimes even served on ice. I put that to the test recently with a 10 year Taylor Fladgate and was not disappointed.

If that is so, I can not imagine why madeira should be shunned in the summer.

I consider myself one who enjoys the spectrum of potent potables (I've been watching Jeopardy too long) and cuisines. Madeira is too good to avoid it for five months of the year (June-October).

Besides, I run the AC on max anyway, so the heat doesn't bother me when I am at home.

Opened a Miguel Jardim Boal a couple of weeks ago. He was a director of Henriques and Henriques. Don't know much about the wine other than it was held in the H&H cellars and was recorked in 1969. Nice wine. Proper boal. Not the concentration and depth for great, but nice in the heat.

as for Roy's question. I consume far more Port than Madeira, but now that I think about it my Madeira consumption does goes down in the summer for some reason. I really doubt it's the weather, as living in southern California it's warm here a good part of the year. I just turn the a/c down a little more and crack some bottles no matter. Maybe because offlines taper off in the summer as everyone is traveling on vacation so I don't have the opportunities????

Now this summer I know I'll be having some well chilled Rose Ports though. I've found 2 (Quevedo and Kopke) that are quite tasty and will be perfect on those warm days. Only problem is they are a bit hard to find here

I drink a lot more Madeira in the summer than winter. I find it easier to sit back outside sipping Madeira than I do with port. Port can be a little heavy for casual outside drinking, and I really enjoy the acid in Madeira more with cigars than I do with port.

We drank 3 bottles of Broadbent 10 Malmsey at my BBQ last Sunday :help:
