TN: Henriques & Henriques Grand Old Bual

Post by Marco D. »

[Madeira @ The Caucus Room (Washington DC)]: Not dated, but circa 1800, rebottled several times. Amazing complexity and balance. Cognac, orange peel, toffee and autumnal spices: cinnamin, clove, allspice. Hints of tea. Elegance and power combined in the most uncanny way... wondeful persistance. The second best wine of the night. OUTSTANDING! 96 points

I had this Madeira last year and posted a note on it. I did so because I wanted to see if anyone else had tried it and liked it as much as I did. All the responses were very positive towards the wine. I think what I liked the best is it's balance. It was rich, sweet, acidic, all at the same time, which made it almost perfect for me. I bought mine on the island and now keep kicking myself for not buying more when it was just "expensive" instead of "obscenely expensive" like it is now. It's very much in my top picks of Madeira's I've enjoyed

Jim,

Everyone I know who has tasted it loved it as well. Gorgeous wine. How long ago did you buy your bottle?

One of my favorite Buals.
Managed to secure a bottle last year. Hoping to bring it to a Madeira tasting some day.

I purchased my bottle in April 2006 when I visted Henreques and Henreques. At the time they were $500. I also bought a Malvasia Reserva which is of similar age. As I said earlier, I am sorry that I didn't buy more when I was there and they were available. When I drank the Grand Old Boal I thought to myself that it can't get much better than this. If it does, I really want to try it.
