1967 Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port

Color: Very deep red, easily the darkest of the four VPs. LIke the Dow it's not purple, but in this case a quite dark garnet.
Nose: Soap. Medium alcohol and slightly dusty minerals. Fermenting dark red fruits, possibly black raspberries. There's something dark and brooding on the nose, like a thunderstorm on the horizon.
Palate: Chocolate, or possibly cocoa powder. Nice heat throughout. Decent grip, but also moderately too astringent. Very ripe red raspberries and mellow black raspberries.

Score: 93 points. The clear winner of the VP flight, and enough to nose ahead of the 1966 Porto Rocha Colheita to prevent a clean sweep by the tawnies. This is my first experience with a Noval Nacional, and it's a very nice bottle. I suspect I would like it even better in another 10 years, and it probably has another 20 ahead of it.

A generous offering by one of my friends, but this did not deliver the greatness I associate with top bottles of this VP, not even close.
