I did see the 2D version. The environment created is amazing, just like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, a new world was created. Though on the story side, no imagination was used there. It is simply another copy of Dancing with the wolves or Last of the Samurai.

Best I can say is that several reviewers that I tend to agree with all seem to have liked it (with some of the same caveats mentioned here).Derek T. wrote:I'm waiting for Peter to tell me it's worth buying the DVDPeter W. Meek wrote:Waiting for the DVD.
I wait for DVDs because I (used to) smoke, and have gotten used to viewing movies at home. I also like to talk to my fellow viewers about the movie, and since I intensely dislike it when others do this in public theaters, I don't do it there either. All-in-all, home viewing is best for me. (Also, I have a good home-theater. Ask Roy.)

Re: Has anybody seen Avatar yet?
Some friends who have seen it said that it's worth going to an IMAX because the 3D is very well done. They said that it's not that silly "something jumps out of the screen at you" 3D that most films have, but is instead just well used 3D technology to make the film better.
My wife and I plan to see it as soon as the crowds die down.

Tried to see it at the IMAX in 3D, but sold out when we went and we didn't want to wait for the late late showing. We'll try again. I'm happy seeing most movies at home, but I thought this might be worth the IMAX 3D experience.
Re: Has anybody seen Avatar yet?
As crazy as this might sound, my 7 year old is asking me to take her. I'd never get away with this if my wife was home, but she's not so I am considering my daughter's request. She is not afraid by stuff on TV or movies, although I realize this might be very intense for her ... probably won't do the 3D for that reason IF I decide to take her.

See the IMAX 3D version. It was pretty amazing. Predictable, yes. Unoriginal story, yes. But still entertaining and amazing. It is pretty intense with the battle scenes. It isn't as bloody and gory as Aliens, but not as gentle as Star Wars Episode I.
Re: Has anybody seen Avatar yet?
Thanks Eric. I wound up buying a pair of tix for New Year's Day at the IMAX theater. Looking forward to it.

Re: Has anybody seen Avatar yet?
Just got back from the 3D-IMAX movie. Wow! Loved it and so did my daughter. Certainly the best use of 3D I've ever experienced and I've seen a ton of 3D films (many of which were kiddie movies).
Glenn,
The sound system was mind blowing and the new theater in the Lincoln Square theater rivals anything in WA state. 65' high screen. Killer experience.

Speaking of Avatar in 3D and IMAX, I was just reading a fun article about the new 3D television sets about to hit the marketplace:

If they have to spend so much to tell me to go see it; it must be lame.
