Vintage port and food combinations

I am planning a dinner/vintage port tasting for some of my friends.
Can anyone recommend a good food match for young VP's?

My only experience so far has only been Stilton and desserts with dark chocolate.

It would be interesting to drink port through a dinner party, from start to finish..

At a recent tasting I hosted we had a prime rib roast with a spice rub. This was, IMHO, an excellent pairing. At an earlier event I prepared Beef Wellington, which was also good but I think the prime rib would be better for young VPs. A lamb dish or elk could work too. And then there is the possibility of a pork loin roast with a Port reduction, but I would prefer a meat with more underlying flavor.

How about some cherrywood smoked duck with a cherry demiglaze (sp?) sauce.

Definitely. Duck most ways would be good, and that sounds even better.

Roast turkey or any yardbird for main course. Cream sauced pasta dishes can work. Cured meats, cheese and nuts for app's.

Just start with a strong cheese, game or a grilled lamb with tiny potatoes with the skin smashed with a punch then cooked with olive oil and small pieces of garlic... for dessert a nice piece of vanilla ice cream with a blackberry topping or a chocolate muffin with hot chocolate cream on the top, or a banana pie 8--)

I´ve done this already and people were :shock:

I once hosted a wine lunch where Madeira and ports were paired with food. The chef made a veal scalopine with a Gorgonzola sauce. It was the best port food pairing I have ever had.

One of my favorite combination's is a Vintage Port with a nice steak cooked medium rare, with red potatoes marinated in olive oil and sea salt.

Tried a bottle of LBV to a sirloin of veal with port sauce. This was not a good match, and a red wine would be more suitable for this dish.
The Niepoort 2004 LBV was needed for the sauce which was wonderful, but I think a more tannic port woul be a better drink.

Suggestions:

º Appetizer: melon soup with peppermint and a light dry white;

º Monkfish loin roasted with pinions and vegetables with a white Old dry from Messias (15y);

º Partridge with prunes and vegetables with grilled bacon...ideal for a Vintage with 10y-15y;

º Pear pie with rasperry and vanilla ice cream... with a nice 10y old tawny... although I think that in my opinion a Over 40y old it´s a kind of Port to drink just a single glass, but the pear taste it goes very well with a Over 40y old.

and as good host just say....

He's safe so long as he sticks to me BBQ'ing some steaks or chicken. Otherwise, eat at your own risk in my house

The big question is ... what is the best type of Port to serve with a Francesinha sandwich? [bye2.gif]

Andy you'll be please to know that Super Bock recently launched new beers that are food friendly(read having more taste). Rubi and Gold are their name.
