This is an outstanding and gracious appeal by the finest retailer of Madeira in the USA. Not only is the restaurant (Acquerello in SF, CA) highly acclaimed but the lineup of wines is extraordinary to say the least. The fact that Mannie Berk and his guest of honor, Barbeito's owner/winemaker, Ricardo Freitas will both be present -- make this is a dinner not to be missed!

Co-sponsored by Acquerello & The Rare Wine Co.
March 18th, 6:30 pm, at Acquerello, San Francisco On March 18th, The Rare Wine Co. is joining with San Francisco's Michelin-starred Acquerello Restaurant for an evening of old and rare wines and fabulous cuisine--with all the proceeds going to benefit victims of the recent devastating floods in Madeira.
The wines, organized in epic flights, will be paired with a brilliant menu created by Suzette Gresham-Tognetti, who with Giancarlo Paterlini, has made Acquerello one of the city's most admired culinary addresses.
The evening's wines pay homage to such great traditionalists as Raveneau, Dauvissat, Soldera, Biondi-Santi, and Lopez de Heredia. We will experience, first hand, some of the greatest vintages of these and other legendary producers, through a series of rare and irreplaceable wines.
Our special guest will be Ricardo Freitas, proprietor and winemaker at Barbeito, one of Madeira's few surviving small producers, whose reputation over the past half century has been built on their legendary old vintages.
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to benefit victims of the floods. Our designated charity is Caritas, which was founded by the Catholic Church more than a century ago to help the needy. Ten days ago, Caritas was the first organization on the ground in Madeira providing food and shelter to the flood victims. And in the coming months, they will be leading the effort to help these families rebuild their lives. It's a privilege to be able to help them in their work.
THE EVENING'S FOOD & WINES
A quick look at the menu and wines will tell you that this will be a culinary and vinous Tour de Force.

Flights 4 and 5: The Madeiras
Of course, the evening would not be complete without a lineup of great old Madeiras. For these, we will be looking to members of America's Madeira-collecting community (including those attending the dinner) to donate worthy bottles. So, you won't know until the evening of March 18th what the Madeiras are, but you can count on them being magical. Even if you can't attend the dinner, let us know if you are interested in donating a bottle of Madeira for this worthy cause.
The menu:*
Lobster panzerotti in a lobster brodo
Breast of guinea hen stuffed with black truffle leek Timballo,
polenta taragna
Loin of lamb in lamb sausage with roasted fennel, black Gaeta olives and marble potatoes
Formaggio: Speziato | La Tur | Baita

The Bottom Line
The cost for all of this is $595 a person, with 100% going to Caritas to aid victims of the February flood in Madeira.
