Your favorite rock n' roll group?

Lots will depend on the era that you grew up in, but as we have 20-something year olds and some in the 60s too on FTLOP, it would be interesting to see the diversity. If you can't decide on just one ... put in your top few bands.

Tough choices. I guess I'll have to just list.
Who, Doors, Elvis Costello, Clash, Replacements, King Crimson, REM, Lemonheads, Pixies; I'm sure I'm leaving out a lot.

Yeah, that's tough. Especially since I like a really wide range of music, and also have an appreciation for "junk food" music along with the better crafted stuff.
Queen, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Styx, the Who, Chicago, Kiss, Rush... I could keep going.

English Beat, REM, Talking Heads, Beatles, Elvis Costello, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley & the Wailers

Since Glenn brought them up, I'll admit that I had a lot of Kiss albums. After that, my favorite group was Styx, and my first concert was U2 (where Bruce Springsteen showed up). Today I don't have a single favorite, but I really liked Linkin Park's third album. On the easier side I like Coldplay, and when I'm in the harder mood, Godsmack and Tool. I might have to buy some Paramore next.

If I have to pick one, that is easy: Led Zeppelin
"Also rans" include: Pink Floyd, Santana, old Aerosmith (not that "Love in an Elevator" crap), The Who, Hendrix. A lot of guitar gods in there, but that is what rock-n-roll is all about.
While none of us will be around to validate this opinion, I am convinced that people will be listening to their music for many more decades, if not centuries.
Notice that Clapton (Cream) is not in there. I cannot stand Clapton and think he is the most overrated guitar player in the genre.

Can't believe I forgot to list Guns 'n' Roses ... Appetite for Destruction makes my short list for the greatest album of all time.
Also Van Halen (DLR era, not Van Hagar)...

I think all my favorite RnR "groups" were actually lead singers with or without backup groups. (Were Dion and the Belmonts a group?)
By the time I was listening to groups, it was mostly folk (I guess the Kingston Trio were a group, but not notably RnR ("While Dion is in the gymnasium(?) singin' about the stars, the Belmonts are out in the parking lot stealing hubcaps off of cars")), blues (Chicago and Delta, plus Ann Arbor's own Prime Movers w/ the Erlewine brothers), country (esp. girl-singers), and bluegrass (so authentic that it HURTS). Add a few Psychedelic groups in there somewhere.
I eventually gravitated to classical music, (Is the Academy of Ancient Music a group?) but still listen to most of those others (except raw Psychedelic) and have even added a fondness for '40s music (and I was just a tot in the '40s). Jo Stafford; now there was a singer.

I'm not sure I know what technically qualifies as rock and roll anymore--a lot of my favorite bands are considered "alternative rock", I think. My favorite: The White Stripes. Followed by Death Cab for Cutie, Panic at the Disco, and The Killers. I realize this could possibly give away which age contingent I belong to...

In approximately this order:
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Frank Zappa, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Who, Moody Blues, Yes, U2, Jethro Tull, Santana, Traffic, The Beatles, and the Gipsy Kings
I guess that gives away a lot about my youth.

Led Zeppelin and AC/DC would be equivalent to the stand-outs from the '63 vintage for me. Pink Floyd deserve a mention too.
Have always enjoyed Rolling Stones on cd (especially their acoustic stuff) but have come away twice from their live shows rather disappointed.
Queen, on the other hand, have a fantastic range of songs and were wonderful live when i saw them with Paul Rodgers (of Bad Company). What I would have given to see Freddie.
I have to disagree on Clapton, who i think is fantastic, but the solo artist who I'm currently really enjoying is Phil Collins. Bon Jovi gets a thumbs up, but of the "modern era" bands I think that Red Hot Chillis would probably be my favourite. I tend to agree that the last twenty years would appear to have produced fewer iconic "stadium rock" acts that will last the distance. U2 just don't do it for me, but I'm not sure whether that is down to their music or the cult of Bono.
Fleetwood Mac and (don't laugh) Europe were the best live show I have seen recently. Huey Lewis and the News are next on my want-to-see list I think.

Ahhh, I should have mentioned Pink Floyd. For a live show, Barenaked Ladies are great. I think it is time to put on some music.

The Rolling Stones. I can't think of any other band who has made as many songs that I like listen to and still like to listen to. It is also note worthy how often these songs are still played on radio stations -- Honky Tonk Woman, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter, Satisfaction, etc.

I am visiting this thread for the first time and had Quenn in my head from reading the first post.
Rob's post reminded me of the worst decsion of my life: in the early 1980s I had a ticket to see Queen at a stadium gig in the UK with my two best friends. In a testosterone-induced moment of madness I gave the ticket to friend number 3 the night before the gig because I had a hot date with the most gorgeous girl in the office.
My three friends had a great night and will no doubt remember Freddie's brilliant performance until the day they die. I got a kiss on the cheek and never saw her again. :really-really-bad-decision-smiley:

If by "older" you mean late 20's, then yes.

And Peter, I prefer to think of those bands/music as "classic rock" rather than oldies, if that helps at all.

Frankly, by the time they took off the "and Roll" and replaced it with various hyphenated prefixes, I think it was all over. :curmudgeon-smiley: Grump - five miles - uphill - both ways.
