1970 Fonseca Vintage Port

Dark raspberry red in color, almost purplish still, and rimmed with just a hint of orange. The nose initially had a very musty character, but this mostly blew off after a few hours of decanting, revealing a bouquet of red berries, roasted nuts, leather, and orange marmalade. The palate is decadent, with big smooth layers of cherry, plum, raspberry and strawberry jam filling the mouth transitioning into notes of pepper, vanilla, roses and licorice on the very long finish. There is still major structure to this port - big tannins and ripe acidity - although the texture is supple and well woven together. It certainly doesn't come off as a 38 year old wine! Still showing strong tannins but excellent mature character as well. Probably hasn't even reached it's peak at this point. Great stuff! 95pts, Tasted 2/08

Lamont,

I can't wait to see what VP it is going to take to earn your respect above 95 points. [bye2.gif]

Funny you should say that. Looking back at my note I also thought my score seemed a little low, but I have to stick with what I wrote at the time. In any case, this was a wonderful port that I certainly hope I have the chance to drink again (and perhaps score even higher  ).

I gave it a 96. Andy V. gave it a 98 which is the high score in the data base. I think Lamont is consistent with the other scores which are a few 90's a 94 or two, a couple of 95's and my 96. Someone gave it 87, and I think there must be something up with that bottle.

Symon,

You have mentioned so many times here the names of bottles you drink. Now two cases of the 1970 Fonseca in the past four years. In two recent threads you type about only drinking 6 bottles of Port per year in total. Am I confused, are all the Port bottles you have consumed in the past four years, Fonseca 1970?

I bought my 1970 Fonseca mags about 17-18 years ago. I opened the first of the bunch in February at a Magnum madness party for my brother's 50th. It was up against GREAT Champagne, Rhone, Rioja, Burgundy, Bordeaux etc. and the majority felt that the Fonseca was the wine of the event. In Magnum, it was still in the mid-neck and absolutely in perfect youthful condition. One of my top experiences with it. Others were all between 96 and 99 points and rightfully so.
