1955 Fonseca Vintage Port - Decanted for 4 hours.  A good friend was in from Chicago and came to dinner last night.  I only have the opportunity to drink this every 4 or 5 years as they are rare and I own none, but somehow am fortunate that guests share this with me.  This was more evolved than the last bottle I had consumed but still a gorgeous Port.  It exhibited a brick-ruby color and light at that, with a pink-orange edge.  This needed no more time in the decanter and was showing perfectly at four hours, so we started to sip it slowly and therefore enjoyed it over the next two hours while talking baseball, movies and even politics.  Anyway, the bouquet was wild with some delicate fragrances of  toffee, chestnut, soy and stewed prunes.  Very exotic and ever changing in the glass this was one to savor.  The mouthfeel was sumptuous and velvety; as good as Vintage Port can feel in the mouth.  There were no detectable tannins whatsoever but still generous traces of acidity to keep this fresh enough to enjoy.  For a '55 this is near the top of the pyramid but I almost never see this Fonseca for sale and would have liked a tad more structure to bring it closer to perfection.  The palate was explosive with waves of flavor rushing forth, with some likeness to a great Amarone with dark prune and chocolate covered cherries but also a beautiful underlying nuttiness that propped up the whole package.  Long and lush with an aftertaste of espresso beans and mocha, this was a fabulous experience.  Thanks Randy!  Enjoy now through 2018.
