Re: What have you opened this week?

The question that I haven't seen answered yet is whether or not the sale encompassed all 5 quintas. I would assume so, but you never know. "Quinta do Mourao" was just one of five, though it was the namesake of the company. As I understand things, Quinta da Poisa (across the Douro from DOC)...

Re: 20 Year+ Tawnies Recap

Well I'll be 66 in November, so 92 would be 26 years away. As I said, I have more than that. Maybe if I live to 95? lol I would not have guessed that you were older than me - you carry it well! Andy - same boat. I have a nephew who has shown some interest in Port, but he doesn't seem to love ...

Re: 20 Year+ Tawnies Recap

I was talking about Port with someone at a barbecue competition this weekend, and when I revealed that I had ~800 bottles they asked if I was going to be able to drink all of that in my lifetime. After a moment's reflection, I had to truthfully answer probably not. I only go through about 2 bottles...

Re: October/November 2023 Warres Otima 20 Year

Great idea, John!

If I can't get ahold of an Otima 20, I'll open my last Dona Antonia (Ferreira). Those are the ones that used to be called Duque de Bragança.

Re: What have you opened this week?

This particular brisket was SRF Gold. One of the other guys on the team is a meticulous meat trimmer, so we turned him loose on it and I think that really contributed to our good showing. He had that poor brisket trimmed down to probably half its starting size! I have cooked everything from Choice a...

Re: 20 Year+ Tawnies Recap

I might have to pick up an Otima 20 just to try it again. Like others, in the past I haven't found it compelling. Both for the QPR and just its overall performance. I found it a bit light/weak but also a bit hot compared to other offerings. The problem is that I don't drink a lot of 20 year old anym...

Re: What have you opened this week?

S. Leonardo 30 Year Old Tawny Port I brought this and an Andresen 40 year old to a barbecue competition figuring we'd drink one on Friday night and the other on Saturday night, both potentially with some cheese and charcuterie that I'd brought along for that purpose. Alas, it was not to be. We did d...

Re: Offline in Los Angeles Area -- 2023 version

Like many of you, I was certainly looking forward to this event, though I also completely understand if we need to reschedule! I suppose I would only request that we try to reschedule in earnest and really try to find a date in the future that people can really look forward to and plan for. After O...

That 1834 Barbeito Malvasia is very nice! Pricey now, though. Didn't used to be!

Re: Offline in Los Angeles Area -- 2023 version

I didn't have Eric as firm for this yet anyway. Edited down for clarity, the list from the 1st post is: Mark L (Yes) [1937 Burmester, unknown port?] Glenn E (Yes) [1937 Kopke, "casual" bottle TBD] Andy V (Yes) David S (Yes) [Kopke 50] Marc J (Yes) [tbd] I still haven't heard back from Lisa...

Re: Offline in Los Angeles Area -- 2023 version

It looks like we have 5 for sure. Lisa and Vic are allegedly looking into coming down as well... I'll ping her again and ask her to post here.

(They're probably on their way to Portugal for PHT right now, so we may not get a quick reply. I've both emailed and texted.)

Re: 2011 Graham's LBV Port

Honestly, I think even filtered LBVs get better with a little decant time. Sure, the intent is to be able to pop-n-pour, but to me virtually any non-oxidized red wine will benefit from a little air time before you drink it. Even a Ruby Reserve gets a little better after 30-60 minutes. And the longer...

Re: Graham's LBV: Filtered or Unfiltered?

Graham's LBVs are filtered, but there are different levels of "filtering" that can be applied. My understanding is that Graham's LBVs use a "lighter" touch with their filtering, but it's still enough that they can't call the final product unfiltered. Note that even unfiltered Por...

Re: Offline in Los Angeles Area -- 2023 version

Unfortunately, it’s looking like that’s the week my MiL is targeting for a knee replacement. I’m going to have to bow out of this time, sorry all! Really itching to get back to see you all in person again (it’s been too long!). Bummer! I was really hoping that you'd be able to make it. It's been to...

I don't think that's too generous at all - 2011 LBVs in general are pretty fantastic, and I do enjoy the Graham.

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

1 x Quinta do Mourao San Leonardo 40 y.o. Tawny I bought this one as a replacement of the one I just shared with my college buddies a few weeks back. It was a 2009 bottling, but the price on WineBid was hard to beat at $113 including bid fees and taxes. 2009 should be one of the "good" on...

1970 Graham Vintage Port for the Sammamish Port Club

A very nice bottle. Somewhat lacking in intensity, but exceptionally smooth and wonderfully balanced.

Re: What is your longest complete vertical?

The 1964 & 1980 required quite a bit of effort (ALOT of effort), but ultimately I was was able to get my hands on them. 1964 is my birth year, so I know the feeling. I'd been looking for one for years - there are only 8 VPs from 1964 so I wanted to find them all - and then one lucky day I stumb...
