Re: Vesuvio Vertical - 1989 to 2008 - 23rd Feb 2010

This thread got me thinking.....Vesuvio has always been a darn good Port since the Symington's took it over and started with the 1989 vintage. I dare say one of the most consistent houses year in and year out during this time. Sure some vintages are better than others, but I've never been disappoin...

Re: March 2010 VT: get a 2007 VP

I actually came to this forum to see if you had posted the "VT ideas for March?" thread yet, but looks like the topic has been chosen. Funny, because 2007 VP is exactly what I was hoping to suggest, seeing as how a lot of folks, myself included, seem to be scrambling for as much info/opini...

Re: 1983 Fonseca

Unfortunately, I'm in the concensus on this one. I've only had this bottle once (in the late 90's) but it was one of the most disappointing VPs in memory - very vegetal and cabbagey on the nose and unpleasantly hot on the palate. Even if there's a chance that another bottle might show better, I don'...

Re: Bring tawny into focus - to much focus on vintage port!

Glenn, Peter and Roy: Thanks for your answers. This is a very interesting thread. I'm glad to learn a bit more about colheitas as I really enjoy them but only rarely have a chance to drink them. This does leave me with a few follow-up questions but I think I'll do a little research on my own and see...

20 Year Old Tawny Port by Ferreira Duque de Braganca

A brick/burnt orange color at the center fading to a light amber rim. The nose is full of dates, dark caramel and toasted walnuts with higher-toned marmalade, dried cherry and spice notes intermingling - very enjoyable. Very good concentration of flavor on the palate with the same date/caramel/nut p...

Re: Bring tawny into focus - to much focus on vintage port!

After reading this thread it brought up a question in my mind. Do the great vintages for VP have any bearing on colheitas? What I mean, more specifically, is that if you happen to find a colheita from an excellent year for VP, take '63 for example, should there be any expectation that the colheita m...

Re: is the quinta noval 2007 best qn young port in last 40 years and is it stuffed with 2007 qnn

If you have the cash to shell out for multiple cases of premier VPs like the Noval 97 or 07, why would you not just buy single bottles of these wines and decide which you like better? As a starving artist/port fanatic who has precious little disposable income to spend on port, it's hard for me to un...

Re: Question on the 64 Krohn White Colheita

I have also had this wine, a generous gift from Andy V, and can confirm that it is excellent. I tasted it at an off-line in London 18 months ago where it accompanied a Ferreira 1830, two spectacular Unknown Shipper 1890s, a Croft 1927 and a Massandra 1936 and it was certainly not disgraced in that ...

2004 Royal Oporto Vintage Port

From a 1/2 bottle with approx. 16hrs decant time: A clear, dark plum at the center with a bright red/purple rim. The nose is still not giving up a whole lot, but it has changed from the primary grape jelly tones it had last night to show some subdued, jammy, blue and black berry notes and a touch of...

Glenn:

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad to hear that you find K&L to be trustworthy as this is the first time I've ordered from them.

Andy:

Thanks for the decanting advice. I'll be sure to give this its due time when I do drink it.

Re: are there any organic port producers of note in the douro

Quinta do Infantado has converted one of their plots to organic farming and is now producing a reserve ruby port from the grapes - apparently 100% Touriga National, though I haven't tried it yet myself. Here's a link to an interesting article about it: http://www.starchefs.com/wine/starvintners/html...

Question on the 64 Krohn White Colheita

I recently purchased a bottle of the 64 Krohn White "Branco" Colheita for $79.99 (online). I'm just wondering whether I got a good deal on it. I've never seen it in a store before, but that seems like a pretty reasonable price for an uncommon 46 yr old wine to me. I see that the TNs here o...

1995 Quinta do Infantado Vintage Port

This was a cheap bottle, $19.99, that was marked down to $17.99 because the label was stained so I figured it was worth a blind try. The cork seemed firm when putting in the corkscrew, but when I tried to extract it the bottom half crumbled and I had to push part of it into the bottle. I have a feel...

Traditional (Unfiltered) LBV These notes were taken after approximately 20 hrs decant time: This one definitely warranted the long decant time, it's really opened up since sipping it last night. It started out deep and rather brooding, but is now more generous, with sweet raspberry, eucalyptus and a...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

This week I picked up a bottle of Quinta do Vesuvio 2003 for $75. Perhaps not the bargain of the century, but considering that this is the most beautiful young VP I've ever tasted it felt like a steal. I'm psyched to finally have one in my collection! [cheers.gif]

Re: 2003 Royal Oporto Vintage Port

Lamont, Definitely a VP you don't hear a lot about, yet from one of the largest Port companies. Do you know what this retails for? From your note, seems if the price is right it would make a nice "anytime" bottle to enjoy in the near to mid term. Andy, Indeed, it's interesting how little ...
